Your smile is usually the first thing people notice about you, so don’t settle for one that doesn’t make you feel amazing! With advanced digital technology and training, Dr. Schultz can enhance your smile in as few as one appointment using cosmetic bonding and enamel contouring procedures.

If you’re unhappy with the appearance of your smile due to small chips or gaps between your teeth, or if you dislike the color or shape of your teeth, cosmetic bonding may be a great option! Tooth  bonding is a conservative and affordable alternative to veneers and other cosmetic treatment options that can restore and enhance the appearance of your front teeth. This procedure involves the use of a composite (tooth-colored) material that is bonded to the tooth, to address any of these imperfections.

The great news about cosmetic bonding and contouring is that it’s a conservative way to address your esthetic concerns (usually, a minimal amount of tooth structure (if any) needs to be removed), and can typically be completed in a single appointment. At Schultz Family Dental, we specialize in creating beautiful, natural-looking results that boost your confidence and transform your smile.

What is Cosmetic Bonding and Contouring?

Dental bonding is a minimally invasive cosmetic dentistry procedure that uses tooth-colored composite resin to improve the appearance of your teeth. When combined with enamel contouring, these techniques work together to create a harmonious, attractive smile in just one visit.

Cosmetic Bonding Can Help To:

  • Fill in small gaps
  • Fix small chips
  • Conceal spots of erosion (wear of the enamel due to acid or other abrasive materials)
  • Repair cracked or broken teeth
  • Cover discolored teeth that don’t respond well to whitening
  • Extend the length of worn teeth

With dozens of shades and hues to choose from, Dr. Schultz can select colors of composite (tooth-colored filling material) that best match your tooth before we begin the procedure. She will also discuss any re-contouring or reshaping that will change the length or width of the teeth, so that we can create a restoration that is harmonious with the shape of your face and smile.

What Enamel Contouring Can Achieve:

  • Enamel contouring (also known as tooth reshaping) can:
  • Create better smile symmetry
  • Shorten overly long teeth
  • Re-shape teeth
  • Eliminate chips
  • Smooth out rough edges or uneven surfaces

The Dental Bonding Procedure

Understanding what to expect during your cosmetic bonding appointment helps you feel confident and prepared.

Step 1: Consultation and Shade  Selection

During your initial consultation, Dr. Schultz will examine your teeth and discuss your smile goals. She’ll use a shade guide to select the perfect composite resin color(s) that matches your natural teeth, ensuring seamless results with your dental bonding procedure.

Step 2: Tooth Preparation

For cosmetic bonding, minimal to no tooth preparation is needed. Dr. Schultz will gently roughen the tooth surface if needed, and apply a bonding agent  to help the composite material adhere properly. This process is typically painless and doesn’t require anesthesia.

Step 3: Applying the Bonding Material

If cosmetic bonding is indicated, tooth-colored filling material (composite) can be added to a tooth/teeth to fill in chips and/or gaps between the teeth, in order to improve their overall appearance. The tooth-colored resin, custom selected to match the color of your tooth/teeth, is applied to chips and/or gaps and is shaped to look like your natural tooth. Dr. Schultz carefully sculpts and molds the composite resin to achieve the desired shape and contour.

Step 4: Hardening and Finishing

Targeted light is then used to harden the resin, and then the restoration is contoured and polished. This special curing light bonds the material to your tooth in just seconds. Once hardened, Dr. Schultz meticulously shapes and polishes your dental bonding to match the sheen of your natural teeth. Most patients can have a single tooth restored in one treatment, but others may require multiple appointments to treat more than one tooth. The entire cosmetic bonding process typically takes 30-60 minutes per tooth.

Caring for Your Composite Bonding

It’s important to care for your teeth following a composite bonding procedure to ensure long-lasting results. While the results of cosmetic contouring are permanent, resin from bonding can become discolored without proper care.

To maximize the lifespan of your dental bonding (typically 5-10 years with proper care):

  • Avoid staining substances: Patients should avoid large amounts of tea, coffee, red wine, and cigarettes to avoid staining the bonding resin
  • Maintain excellent oral hygiene: Regular brushing, flossing, and dental visits can help to keep your smile healthy and help to maintain the appearance of your natural teeth
  • Protect your teeth: Avoid biting hard objects like ice, pens, or fingernails
  • Wear a mouthguard: If you play contact sports or grind your teeth at night, protect your cosmetic bonding with a custom mouthguard
  • Schedule regular checkups: Dr. Schultz will monitor your dental bonding during routine visits and can touch up or repair as needed

With proper care, your tooth  bonding can last for years.

FAQs

With proper care, dental bonding typically lasts 5-10 years before requiring touch-ups or replacement. Your individual results may vary based on oral habits, diet, and oral hygiene practices. Regular dental cleanings and checkups help extend the life of your cosmetic bonding.

No, dental bonding is typically painless. Because the procedure requires minimal to no tooth preparation, most patients don’t need anesthesia. Enamel contouring is also comfortable, as Dr. Schultz only removes a small amount of enamel from the outer surface of your tooth.

The cost of dental bonding varies depending on the number of teeth being treated and the complexity of your case. Cosmetic bonding is generally one of the most affordable cosmetic dental procedures. During your consultation, we’ll provide a detailed cost estimate based on your specific needs.

Yes! Cosmetic bonding is an excellent solution for closing small to moderate gaps between teeth. The composite resin is shaped to fill the gap and create a more uniform appearance. For larger gaps, Dr. Schultz may recommend combining  bonding with orthodontic treatment or veneers.

While the composite resin used in cosmetic bonding resists staining better than natural teeth, it can become discolored over time with exposure to staining substances like coffee, tea, red wine, and tobacco. Following the care instructions above helps maintain the appearance of your dental bonding.

Teeth whitening treatments don’t affect composite resin, so any bonding on your teeth will remain its original shade. If you’re interested in whitening, we recommend doing so before your cosmetic bonding procedure so Dr. Schultz can match the composite to your newly whitened smile.

The term “porcelain bonding” typically refers to porcelain veneers, which are thin shells bonded to teeth. Unlike composite dental bonding which uses resin applied directly to teeth, porcelain veneers are fabricated in a dental lab.. Both can create beautiful results.

Cosmetic bonding is typically considered an elective cosmetic procedure and may not be covered by dental insurance. However, if dental bonding is being used to repair a chipped tooth due to injury or to fill a cavity, some insurance plans may provide partial coverage. Our team will help you understand your coverage and payment options.
