What to Expect During Your Comprehensive Dental Exam
Medical History Review
Your comprehensive exam at Schultz Family Dental will begin with a thorough review of your dental and medical histories.
Cancer Screening
Dr. Schultz will then complete a head and neck examination to check these areas for any abnormalities. She will also conduct an oral cancer screening to check the health of your lips, tongue, and tissues.
Gum Examination
A comprehensive periodontal (gum tissue) evaluation will then be completed to check for any signs of disease. Gum disease has been linked to several medical conditions, so maintaining healthy gums is very important to maintaining your overall health.
X-Ray Digital Imaging
Low-radiation digital x-rays will be taken to check the health of your teeth and supporting bone. X-rays allow us to see things we may not be able to detect in your mouth as we’re evaluating your complete dental health. In our practice, we integrate dental-specific AI technology to aid our team in early detection, diagnosis, and education. Our goal for all of our patients is prevention of disease, and this tool allows us to do just that.
Photography
Digital and intraoral photography allow us to capture detailed images of your teeth and gums for diagnosis, education, and treatment planning.
iTero® Wellness Scan
This scan captures high-resolution, 3D images of your teeth and bite and allows our team to detect changes in your enamel, bite alignment, gum recession, and tissue health. It’s quick, comfortable, and incredibly accurate—allowing us to identify concerns early and offer a more personalized treatment plan.
Physical Examination
Dr. Schultz will then evaluate each of your teeth to check for any cavities, examine the condition of any previous dental treatment, and evaluate any treatment needs—all of which will allow us to create an individualized treatment plan for you.
iTero® Wellness Scans
As part of your comprehensive dental exam, we use iTero Wellness Scans to capture high-resolution, 3D images of your teeth and bite. This advanced technology allows us to:

Dr. Schultz will complete a comprehensive dental exam for every new patient of the practice, and then at appropriate intervals as your individual treatment plan dictates. She will complete a periodic exam (an abbreviated version of the comprehensive dental exam) at least every 6 months
A cleaning removes plaque and tartar; a comprehensive dental exam evaluates the overall health of your teeth, gums, tissues, and supporting structures.
A comprehensive dental exam lasts about 1 hour. If you would like a cleaning completed at the same visit, you can plan for about 2 hours.
