Routine Teeth Cleaning

Why Professional Teeth Cleaning Matters

Having your teeth professionally cleaned is important to your health, and should  be done at least once every six months, depending on the condition of your gum tissues. A professional cleaning helps to review and reinforce correct brushing and flossing habits at home, and gives those areas that may need special attention professional care. Routine cleanings ultimately help rid the mouth of destructive bacteria, ensuring a healthy and happy you!

A build-up of plaque around the teeth and under the gums can cause harmful problems—such as gingivitis, bad breath, bone loss, tooth decay, and even tooth loss—which is why routine cleanings are so important. But the benefits of regular cleanings don’t stop here—they are also important for your overall health and wellnessWe  use your dental cleaning appointment to screen for early signs of oral cancer, diabetes-related changes, and abnormalities of the head and neck—making these visits essential for your overall wellness.

What to Expect During Your Dental Cleaning

Before your teeth cleaning begins, you will have a chance to voice any concerns or questions you may have about your dental health. Your dental cleaning might also involve taking x-rays to examine areas of the mouth that can’t be seen with the naked eye, determining the health of your gum tissue, or completing an iTero wellness scan—all of which are completed at different intervals.

These diagnostic tools help us to determine the type of dental cleaning best suited to your needs.  Some patients may simply require a healthy mouth cleaning, others may suffer from gum tissue inflammation and need treatment called “gingivitis therapy.”  If you suffer from a combination of bone loss, bacterial deposits around and beneath your gum tissue, and gum tissue inflammation, you might require more extensive care to treat the periodontal disease, often called “scaling and root planing,” or a deep cleaning.

When you have your teeth cleaned at Schultz Family Dental, your dental hygienist  uses state-of-the-art dental instruments to gently remove any plaque and tartar that has built up, both on the teeth and below the gumline. When Dr. Schultz examines your mouth, she will look for any potential concerns related to the teeth and gums, to ensure you’re at your best!

After the plaque and tartar has been removed, we will floss between your teeth,  and offer you a fluoride treatment. Fluoride works as a protectant for your teeth against cavities by hardening the enamel. After your dental cleaning, we will review any concerns we may have, and answer all of your questions.

Guided Biofilm Therapy (GBT): A More Comfortable, More Effective Cleaning

Guided Biofilm Therapy is an advanced approach to teeth cleaning that removes plaque, bacteria, and tartar using gentle airflow technology instead of scraping. It is more precise, more comfortable, and highly effective for both routine dental cleanings and deep cleaning teeth appointments.

GBT Benefits:

  • Less sensitivity
  • More thorough bacterial removal
  • Ideal for patients with gum disease, braces, or implants
  • Supports healthier gums and long-term periodontal stability

Deep Cleaning (Scaling & Root Planing)

When Deep Cleaning Teeth is Needed

Maybe it’s been a few years since your last cleaning, and your gums are really red and sore. Or maybe your gums bleed when brushing or flossing, and you’ve started to notice bad breath. If this sounds familiar, you may need a deep cleaning teeth procedure called scaling and root planing.

Understanding Periodontal Disease

As a part of your exam, your dental hygienist will take a complete set of digital x-rays and complete a comprehensive periodontal examination, which includes measuring the health of your gum tissue and bone. Based on her findings, she’ll determine whether a healthy mouth or gingivitis therapy  dental cleaning is sufficient, or whether scaling and root planing is recommended.

Signs of Periodontal Disease

  • Red, inflamed gums that bleed during brushing or flossing
  • Persistent bad breath
  • Gum recession or large black triangles between teeth
  • Deep pockets in the gum tissue where plaque and bacteria collect
  • Bone loss (detectable on x-rays)

When patients are diagnosed with periodontal disease, the most common and conservative treatment is scaling and root planing.

What Happens During Scaling and Root Planing?

When gum disease occurs, periodontal pockets form and trap bacteria beneath the gumline. This can cause inflammation, bone loss, and even tooth loss.

During scaling and root planing, we gently clean these pockets by removing plaque and tartar at and below the gumline. This process supports gum healing, reduces inflammation, prevents bone loss, and slows or stops the progression of periodontal disease.

After treatment, Dr. Schultz and your dental hygienist will re-evaluate your gum and bone levels to determine how well you’ve responded and whether additional therapy is needed.

FAQs

Most patients benefit from a dental cleaning every six months at minimum; however, at Schultz Family Dental, we collect a full set of diagnostic data that allows us to customize our teeth cleaning recommendations to our patients, based on their individual needs. Teeth cleaning recommendations do not take a one-size-fits-all approach.

Deep cleaning teeth treatments are recommended when gum pockets consistently measure 4mm or deeper, when signs of gum disease are present, and/or when there are bacterial deposits beneath the gum tissue, indicating bone loss.

We use gentle techniques, numbing options, and Guided Biofilm Therapy to reduce discomfort.

Many plans provide partial or full coverage. Our team can help verify your benefits.
