It’s normal to feel a little nervous about your child’s first dental visit. You don’t know how your child will act, or if they’ll be scared, or you might be unsure of when exactly you should take them. At Schultz Family Dental, we stress the importance of starting your child’s relationship with dental care early! This sets them up for healthy habits, and teaches them that the dentist is nothing to be afraid of.
When to schedule an appointment
You should schedule a dental appointment for your child once you see a tooth coming in. This usually occurs between six and twelve months. If your child is a year old and you still haven’t seen a tooth, it’s still recommended to make an appointment around this time.
What to expect at your first visit
Your child’s first dental visit will be a quick and easy one. Your child’s teeth and gums will be examined and cleaned to ensure that everything is developing properly and to detect any signs of a fluoride deficiency. Your dentist can also show you proper brushing and flossing techniques. A child’s first appointments are important in forming a positive view of going to the dentist for years to come.
What you can do at home to ensure your child’s dental health
We can examine your child’s teeth and show that the dentist isn’t a scary place, but it’s up to you to encourage healthy dental habits at home. Make sure you brush your child’s teeth twice a day and floss once a day. Your child’s full set of teeth might not be in until three years of age; however, you should still schedule check-up visits every six months.
